The last religious architecture series was the Seoul Central Church (Presbyterian Church of Korea), located in Jongno, Seoul, where ordinary things are beautiful.

The religious architecture series to be introduced this time is the Cathedral of St. Nicholas (Korean Orthodox Church, Greek Orthodox Church, Universal Orthodox Church) located in Mapo-gu, Seoul.

It is the headquarters of the Korean Orthodox Church (Greek Orthodox Church, Universal Orthodox Church). Rest assured, this place has no connection with the Russian Independent Orthodox Church.

It was designated as a Seoul Future Heritage site and its architectural style is amazing. It's Byzantium!

Honestly, how many Byzantine-style chapels are there in Seoul?

It is so unique that you will fall into the illusion of experiencing the beauty of Constantinople and its early Christian cathedrals.

The interior is particularly gorgeous, so let's first look into the history of this chapel.

“After the Greek teacher from Arasa (Russia) came to Korea, he had no place to preach, so he recommended a church in the Russian embassy and preached there.

At Saemun Pass They say they are building a Greek church in a hurry." <Imperial Newspaper, May 18, 1900>

The Orthodox Church in Korea originally held services at the Russian Embassy (the same building where King Gojong was splattered).

St. Nicholas Cathedral (also called Russian Church or Greek Church) was built on the site of the current Kyunghyang Shinmun Jeong-dong headquarters.

It appears that it has started. However, it is said that it became difficult to maintain the Orthodox community due to the Russo-Japanese War and the Russian Revolution.

During the Jeongdong era, the Orthodox Church originally tried to build a cathedral building in the Russian style in Jeongdong, but it became impossible due to the revolution mentioned above.

Originally, after the initial construction failed, a Russian Orthodox missionary attempted to build a new cathedral by receiving funds from Emperor Nicholas II of Russia.

It is said that the council did not approve construction costs, and the temporary cathedral building was used for 60 years.

Due to the intense persecution by the Japanese Empire, only one Orthodox parish remains in Jeong-dong.

Meanwhile, the holy relics and tools used for the Eucharistic service were sent from Russia, and all of them were sent from Russia in the 19th century.

It is said to be a cultural heritage and is kept at St. Maxim's Cathedral, an affiliated cathedral for Russian-language services at St. Nicholas Cathedral.

St. Maxim's Cathedral is an underground cathedral located in the basement of the building attached to the St. Nicholas Cathedral.

The photo shows St. Maxim's Cathedral, and it is known that Russian cultural heritage from the 19th century is stored here.

The person in the photo is Patriarch Bartholomew, the Ecumenical Patriarch of the Orthodox Church (and Patriarch of Constantinople).

There is a wall with icons (iconostasis) that divides the Holy of Holies of the altar and the nave, various icons, utensils for the Eucharistic service, and ceremonial Gospel readings.

It is said to be stored here. Afterwards, as it became difficult for the Russian Orthodox Church to manage this place, the Japanese Orthodox Church obtained registration through a foundation in 1923.

This place is managed, but after liberation, this place is legally classified as Jeoksan (property accumulated by enemy soldiers and Japanese) and is completely confiscated by the state.

Due to the legal dispute over the ownership of the cathedral, the Korean Orthodox Church is in many legal conflicts with the Korean government.

And after liberation, the Jeongdong parish was already in ruins due to shelling, so all Orthodox believers were scattered.

At this time, it was the Anglican Church of Korea that helped the Korean Orthodox Church. At the time, the Anglican Church's Seoul Cathedral (Seoul Episcopal Cathedral) was in good condition.

Until a temporary cathedral is built for the wandering Orthodox believers who lost their cathedral. Seoul Cathedral's underground cathedral (St. John the Baptist's Cathedral) and its altar were lent to us.

Since then, the bond between the Anglican Church of Korea and the Korean Orthodox Church has continued, and when St. Paul's Cathedral in Incheon was built, the altar from the Anglican Church's Naedong Cathedral was used.

They provided a lot of help, including providing temporary loans and helping to arrange construction sites. At this time, female Anglican priests were ordained.

It was also before this was accomplished, and the fact that the relationship between the Anglican Church and the Orthodox Church throughout the world was very good also played a role.

There are some aspects of the Anglican Church that are more consistent with the Orthodox Church than the Catholic Church. Later, through the efforts of a Greek Orthodox priest who became a war priest for the UN forces,

Although the cathedral was restored and regained its original appearance, the church suffered from financial problems due to the accumulated legal problems mentioned above, and after a long lawsuit against the government,

They won the case, but they could no longer afford to maintain the Jeong-dong parish, so they sold the land and moved to Ahyeon-dong, Mapo-gu.

After moving the main church to Ahyeon-dong, Mapo-gu in 1968, the Kyunghyang Shinmun headquarters building was built on the site.

What makes it unique is its splendid interior, with the icon of Jesus Christ, the ruler of all things, painted on the ceiling of the main hall.

This cathedral is the cathedral of the Orthodox Archdiocese of Korea and the headquarters of the Korean Orthodox Church.

The patron saint, Saint Nicholas, is a Christian priest who serves as the motif of Santa Claus at Christmas (secretly leaving a piece of gold at a neighbor's house, etc.).

The architect in charge of the construction of this cathedral, which was completed in 1968, was Cho Chang-han, a former professor of architecture at Kyung Hee University.

This cathedral was the first properly constructed Orthodox cathedral in the Korean Orthodox Church.

In 1956, the General Assembly of the Church's believers decided to move the affiliation of the Korean Orthodox Church from the Russian Orthodox Church to the jurisdiction of Constantinople, and the province was moved.

Greeks, not Russians, helped rebuild the cathedral, ultimately building a Byzantine-style cathedral rather than a Russian-style cathedral.

The building structure itself used reinforced concrete rather than traditional brick construction. Of course, it does not seem to be obvious that it is a reinforced concrete construction.

The interior objects and icons were created by the Greek government and Greek Orthodox artists (a team of professors from the Department of Art at the University of Athens). It is said that it was possible to complete it through visits and support.

A team of professors from the Department of Art at the University of Athens and Professor Sozos Janoudis continued to visit Korea.

I give special lectures to the Korean Orthodox Church, teach sacred painting techniques, and paint sacred paintings. They say they are serving.

This cathedral recently attempted to expand and rebuild the cathedral along with the construction of Ahyeon New Town, but the diocese refused because it did not yet have such a large amount of money.

This cathedral, which can be found by walking into an alley near Gongdeok Station, is called Bald Head Church or Bald Church by the residents of Ahyeon-dong, Mapo-gu...

In 1978, Archbishop Dionysius of New Zealand, who also served as the head of the Diocese of Korea, consecrated this cathedral. The bell tower was also built with support from the Greek government.

Several Orthodox bells are also said to have been produced in Greek military factories.

The old seminary and the Korean Orthodox Diocese building surrounding the cathedral are attached buildings.

There is a restaurant and auditorium, the bishop's office, the diocese office, a book cafe and a relic room.

It is said that in the basement of the annex, there is St. Maxim's Cathedral for Slavic-speaking believers.

Next Religious Architecture Series The architecture to be discussed is to maintain religious balance.

Myeongdong Cathedral (Korean Catholic Church). I pray that Alba doesn't send Sylvie arbitrarily.

It's boring to only cover Christian architecture, so let's just insert ethnic religions in the middle and focus on shamanism and Buddhism later.

Domestic Protestant churches are being investigated in relation to the Anglican Church, Methodist Church, Lutheran Church, missionary houses, mission schools, and monasteries.

Please expect as much as you can. Saemoonan Church, Yeongnak Church, and Gangnam Baptist Church are also scheduled to be covered in the meantime.

There are other Orthodox cathedrals in Korea worth seeing, so I will cover them slowly.
