The last religious architecture series was the Cathedral of St. Nicholas, the cathedral of the Korean Orthodox Church (not the Russian Independent Orthodox Church) located in Ahyeon-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul.
The religious architecture series to be introduced this time is Myeongdong Cathedral (Myeongdong Cathedral), the seat of the Korean Catholic Church in Myeongdong, Seoul.
Myeongdong Cathedral is a neo-Gothic, Gothic-style Christian chapel.
Across the main street, there is a very mysterious and beautiful Presbyterian Church called Youngnak Church (Presbyterian Church of Korea), so let's talk about it later.
The Seoul Episcopal Cathedral of the Anglican Church of Korea, which we covered previously, is Romanesque, and the cathedral of St. Nicholas of the Korean Orthodox Church, which we covered last time, is Byzantine.
This Myeongdong cathedral is Gothic.
It would be very difficult to tell the entire history of this cathedral in one post, so I will omit some parts and focus only on the aesthetic aspects.
Myeongdong Cathedral is where the house of martyr Thomas Kim Beom-woo was located. It is said to be the place where the first Catholic liturgy was held.
Kim Beom-woo Thomas studied the Bible and theology (Western Learning) at his home with Andrew Jeong Yak-jeon, Peter Seung-hun Lee, and others, and prayed ceremonial prayers.
The others were caught and admonished as they were descendants of prominent families, but Thomas Beom-woo Kim was tortured and exiled, as he was a solitary class, and was martyred (soldier).
In 1886, Joseon and France established diplomatic relations (Treaty of Amity and Commerce between Joseon and the French Republic), and religious freedom was guaranteed in Joseon.
Myeongdong Cathedral is a new cathedral that began to be built on Myeongdong Hill, the site of the home of Thomas Kim Beom-woo, a martyr in Joseon.
However, there was a conflict with the government during the new construction process, and because Yeonghuijeon, which enshrined the royal family's portrait, was located at the bottom of the hill in Myeongdong, it was delayed due to hierarchy issues.
It is said that the working engineers who built the cathedral came from China, but when the First Sino-Japanese War broke out, they returned to China and the new construction was delayed.
During the Japanese colonial era, Father Willem passed information (about the plan to assassinate Governor of Joseon Terauchi) obtained from James An Myeong-geun, a cousin of Thomas Ahn Jung-geun, to Bishop Mutel.
Bishop Mutel immediately reported this to the Government-General, and in return, resolved the issue of litigation with the Japanese regarding the site for the construction of a new cathedral nearby.
After receiving the land, Myeongdong Cathedral began a large-scale expansion. After the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War, a peace mass was held to promote the Empire.
There is a dark history of collecting consolation money for the Imperial Army. The bells of the cathedral were almost torn off due to the military supply order, but Archbishop Paul No Gi-nam closed the bell tower.
So the bell was safe, but instead the iron communion railing in the nave was torn down and taken out.
During the Korean War, when the People's Army was stationed nearby, the U.S. military offered to the Korean Catholic Church to "build a new cathedral" instead of bombing the area.
Because the backlash is extreme It was canceled. Lee Wan-yong came to Myeongdong Cathedral to attend a memorial mass for the infamous Belgian imperialist monarch Leopold II.
Lee Jae-myeong, a Protestant, tried to kill him with a knife but failed, and Lee Wan-yong, who was stabbed, survived after receiving treatment from the best thoracic surgeon at the time.
It is the largest Gothic cathedral in Korea and was built with financial support from the Paris Foreign Mission Society.
The cathedral was designed by Father Cost. Father Cost died midway, and Father Poinel took over his duties, and it was completed in 1898.
For a Gothic style, the windows are small and the pillars are thick, but it seems that the cathedral collapsed during construction.
The remains of martyrs are enshrined in the mausoleum (holy ground) under the cathedral.
Additionally, Myeongdong Cathedral is designated as a national historic site.
To make the Myeongdong Cathedral area, which has religious, historical, cultural, and architectural significance, the center of the Myeongdong Special Tourist Zone from 2011 to 2029.
The so-called 21st century Myeongdong Cathedral development plan (Myeongdong Cathedral special planning area detailed development plan) is in progress, and an underground parking lot and an underground shopping mall are being built.
Cafes and bookstores are located here, creating a quiet atmosphere in the underground plaza.
The area that was used as a parking lot was turned into a plaza in front of the cathedral, creating a pleasant, European cathedral-like atmosphere.
It appears that there are detailed plans, including repairing the Catholic center built in the 1960s and demolishing the education center to build a mission center.
There are also opposing views on the development and repair of Myeongdong Cathedral and its development as a cultural tourism center.
Member of the National Priests' Association for Catholic Justice (Jeonggusa, Liberation Theology, Progressivism)
Father Ham Se-woong, a senior priest at the Archdiocese of Seoul, expressed negative views in the Hankyoreh newspaper.
It seems that the relationship between the Priests' Association for Justice (Jeonggusa) and the Archdiocese of Seoul is quite bad.
For your information, it seems that since last year, a position called a prayer priest, who wears a unique robe found only in Europe, has been created at Myeongdong Cathedral.
Since we regularly interact with visitors and believers and offer community prayers, if you visit at the right time, you can pray together in the temple.
It is said that when you go on a tour of the cathedral, you can pray for the laying on of hands, attend a blessing ceremony for holy relics, receive religious counseling, and share stories.
Lastly, I will end with a photo of Myeongdong Cathedral (including the underground martyr mausoleum).
Next Religious Architecture Series The architecture to be discussed is to maintain religious balance.
Saemoonan Church (Presbyterian Church of Korea) is the first Protestant church in Korea. I pray that Alba doesn't send Sylvie arbitrarily.
It's boring to only cover Christian architecture, so let's just insert ethnic religions in the middle and focus on shamanism and Buddhism later.
Domestic Protestant churches are being investigated in relation to the Anglican Church, Methodist Church, Lutheran Church, missionary houses, mission schools, and monasteries.
Please expect as much as you can. We also plan to cover Youngnak Church and Gangnam Baptist Church in the meantime.
