The last religious architecture series was Gwanglim Church (Korean Methodist Church) located in Sinsa-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul.
The religious architecture series to be introduced this time is the ‘Great Basilica for the Exaltation of the Holy Cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ’.
The official name is Sanjeong-dong Martyrs Memorial Cathedral (Catholic) in Mokpo, Jeollanam-do.
It was designated as Korea's first quasi-basilica (equivalent to the Holy Family Cathedral in Barcelona) by the Vatican.
Sanjeong-dong Cathedral is a cathedral in Sanjeong-dong, Mokpo-si, Jeollanam-do, and is where the Catholic missionary work in the Gwangju area of Jeollanam-do began.
This cathedral was built by Irish missionaries from the St. Columban Foreign Mission Society of Ireland, which was the least Catholic missionary work in colonial Joseon.
They settled here to begin missionary work in the Jeonnam region. Maybe it's because the Irish missionaries here are Irish.
At the time, Catholics had a uniquely strong aversion to shrine worship and Japanese rule over Joseon. It is said that he had negative anti-imperialist tendencies.
At this time, Irish missionary priests were hated by the government-general authorities for their opposition to Shinto shrine worship and the Japanese Empire's colonial rule of Joseon.
He was also awarded the National Foundation Medal, the highest decoration in Korea. During the Korean War, a priest was martyred (disappeared) by the North Korean army.
In addition, there appears to be a space to commemorate the martyrs who were martyred by the North Korean army during the Korean War.
This cathedral, which was completed and consecrated in 2021, was recognized for its historical, religious, and artistic value by the Vatican's Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments and was designated as a quasi-basilica.
Therefore, it is said that this cathedral became the highest-ranking cathedral, surpassing all cathedrals on the Korean peninsula, including Myeongdong Cathedral.
The image of a sizeable statue of Jesus with its arms spread out toward the Sanjeong-dong neighborhood and the snowy scenery of the cathedral are impressive.
Next Religious Architecture Series The architecture to be discussed is a majestic religious architecture.
This is Namdaemun Church (Presbyterian Church of Korea) located in Jung-gu, Seoul.
We will continue to deal freely with issues regardless of religious sect.
